I teach in the Philosophy Department at Brown University, mainly in political philosophy. I came to Brown from my first job at UC Irvine, where I taught from 1986-2001. I spent a year sabbatical at the Program in Ethics and the Professions at Harvard, and another sabbatical year in the Research School of Social Sciences at Australian National University. I also taught for a semester at Harvard Law School. My research after my dissertation at University of Wisconsin-Madison (PhD 1986) was mostly in the area of democratic theory, culminating (so to speak) in my book, Democratic Authority: A Philosophical Framework (2008). My second book was, Utopophobia: On the Limits (If Any) of Political Philosophy, from Princeton University Press, 2020. I've currently been working on issues about the normative nature of (especially "structural") injustice, with two recent pieces listed under the "Papers" tab above.
I grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and now live in Seekonk, Massachusetts. I have three grown children: Corey, Marshall, and Hannah. In my spare time I love cycling, playing and hearing music, and photography.
